CR 914s IN THE LEUKEMIA CUP
by Brian Jobson

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a fund raising organization dedicated to finding cures for blood diseases, has been holding the Leukemia Cup events for big boats since 2000. The 2009 schedule saw 38 regattas across the country from the Atlantic to the Pacific and all points in between. The renowned sailor and president-elect of US SAILING, Gary Jobson, is a lymphoma survivor due in large part to the research funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Pre-race CR 914 lineup

One of the Leukemia Cup events this year was hosted by North Cove Yacht Club, Duck Island Yacht Club and Brewer Pilots Point Marina and held on Saturday August 29, 2009. North Cove Yacht Club is also home to the North Cove Knee Deep Model Yacht Club. The NCKDMYC sails and races CR 914s on a weekly basis. With the enthusiasm generated by the NCYC for participation in the Leukemia Cup, the modelers approached the committee voicing a desire to participate in this fund raising event as well. From my knowledge this is the first time models have been included in the great event. We should be honored that it is the CR 914s that lead the way in helping not only our sport but society as well.

North Cove Yacht Club Leukemia Cup Operation

Saturday found tropical storm Danny on our doorstep, bringing moderate winds from the ENE at 8-10 mph and rain and more rain. The CR 914s from NCKDMYC and neighboring Dry Pant Model Yacht Club comprised a 21 boat fleet. The first 7 races were run under the heat management system, with the final 4 races of the day as a single fleet due to the attrition from rain, salt water, and mechanical breakdowns reducing the number of racing boats to a manageable level.

The results of the day’s racing for the CR 914s found Chuck Poindexter taking first place honors. Congratulations Chuck. Click here  to see the complete results. An outstanding job was done by the race committee who fought wind and rain to call the line and keep the score sheets dry. Also a great big thank you to the Don Beaulieu who put this regatta together and his staff as well as all the volunteers who made this happen.

This single event, including all the big boat entries, raised over $62,000.
